Catalina Island
Isla Catalina, also called Isla Ikiita (and also called by the local natives as Toeya), is an island that is located in the Caribbean Sea only a few kilometers to the southeast of the province of La Romana that is part of the Dominican Republic. From La Romana it takes half an hour to get to Catalina Island. It has an area of approximately 9.6 square kilometers and is uninhabited. The island integrates the trio of adjacent islands of the southeast of the country next to the Saona and the Catalinita. It has diverse natural beauties, as its paradisiac beaches with white sands and in the crystalline waters that surround it live different species of birds and fishes. The island was baptized thus by the navigator Cristóbal Columbus in its trip by the area in May of 1494. It is a popular tourist destination and place frequented by some cruises ships of the Caribbean. Bayahibe
Bayahíbe is an indigenous word. Its meaning is not known with certainty, but with the references that we have we can think that it was linked to the water and possibly to the sea. It might indicate a place on the seashore where fish were abundant.
Bayahíbe has remained populated since prehistoric times, which is not surprising due to its privileged location. Springs of fresh water and an excellent bay to be used as a harbor, abundance of coral reefs populated by fish, mollusks and crustaceans, the land area with mangroves and areas susceptible of being cultivated.
Diving, Submarine Museums and Captain Kidd's Wreck :
Diving is probably the most common tourist attraction in Bayahíbe and is the best place for diving in the Dominican Republic. There are more than 20 official dive sites located near Bayahíbe and all are accessible from the local dive boats. Bayahíbe benefits from the crystalline and calm waters of the Caribbean Sea, which makes it perfect for many water sports like diving and standing paddle. Deep-sea fishing is another popular activity.
Fascinating underwater archaeological reserves are located in the hotel zone of Bayahíbe. They have recreated naugrafios of galleons of the 18th century, to represent what once discovered marine biologists. Remains of the pirate ship "La Cara Mercante", commanded by Captain William Kidd were discovered outside Catalina Island in 2008, after having abandoned it in 1699 in order to clear his name of charges of piracy. From this discovery came the Living Museum, which is also available as a scientific field resource for students and professionals in underwater archeology, marine biology, ecology and geology.
Visitors can also marvel at the colorful marine life, the formation of corals and even could have contact with friendly dolphins, cat sharks or manatees.

Saona Island
Saona Island is one of the largest island of the Dominican Republic located off the coast of the province of La Altagracia. It is part of the Cotubanama National Park (former East National Park). The island is also a great tourist attraction for its beautiful beaches and natural beauties. The island has two permanent human settlements, the hamlets of Man Juan and Catuano. Mano Juan is a fishing village with wooden houses and Catuano is a beach, which has a detachment of the navy.
